The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 and call on countries, companies and citizens to act together for a sustainable future. As the operator of the Max-Schmeling-Halle, Velomax also wants to contribute to these goals. To this end, we have aligned our operational and event processes with the SDGs and identified eight particularly relevant topics that we are focusing on.
SDGs - Sustainable Development Goals
5 Gender equality
We stand for an equal, safe and inclusive working environment. When filling open positions, we ensure a balanced selection of applicants. We have a 50% share of women in management. Flexible working time models and the compatibility of family and career, including in management positions, are a matter of course for us. We are also regularly involved in Future Day (formerly Girls' Day).
6 Clean water and sanitary facilities
We use modern technologies to reduce water consumption in building cleaning and minimize water pollution through the targeted use of ecological and chemical-reduced cleaning methods. Clean and hygienic sanitary facilities for everyone are our top priority. Time limiters on taps and showers and the use of water-saving aerators in the arena, side halls and changing rooms also contribute to sustainable water conservation.
7 Clean Energy
Energy efficiency and the consistent reduction of our carbon footprint are a central component of our energy management in accordance with DIN EN ISO 50001. We purchase 100% green electricity from renewable sources, rely entirely on LED lighting and produce around 225 MWh of electricity annually with a photovoltaic system on the roof of the Max-Schmeling-Halle, which is fed into the public grid.
8 Decent Work
Velomax stands for fair and punctual remuneration for all employees and actively counteracts income inequality. Codes of conduct for employees and suppliers - including compliance with supply chain due diligence obligations - and regular supplier audits ensure responsible and transparent action along the entire value chain.
11 Sustainable Cities
Green spaces and green roofs improve the microclimate, biodiversity and thermal insulation, supplemented by beehives on the site. A photovoltaic system on the roof of the Max-Schmeling-Halle generates around 225 MWh of electricity per year. The hall is barrier-free, centrally located, well connected to public transport and supports CO₂-free mobility with bicycle and scooter stations. Consistent waste management reduces additional environmental pollution.
12 Responsible consumption
Economical cleaning techniques and sustainable cleaning agents - including water treatment and reuse as part of the Clean & Green certification - reduce the consumption of resources. Additional water savings are achieved through water-saving aerators and the use of cold water in visitor areas. In catering, we rely on regional, seasonal and ecological suppliers, avoid disposable cups through deposit systems and donate surplus food to charitable organizations.
13 Climate Action
Our environmental management system in accordance with DIN ISO 14001 (since 2021) forms the basis for a continuous reduction in environmental pollution, including through the reduced use of chemicals in cleaning. Mobile working models support flexible working, while the sustainability strategy is firmly anchored in corporate principles and communication. We actively share knowledge through guided tours, presentations and speaker appearances at industry and specialist events as well as in dialog with regional and national media.
15 Live on Land
In cooperation with a local beekeeper, the green roof of the Max-Schmeling-Halle is home to several bee colonies. From spring to autumn, Guteschafe sheep take over the natural maintenance of the green areas and replace motorized mowers in an insect-friendly way. Birdhouses, bird protection stickers on glass surfaces and regular participation in biodiversity projects - such as the NABU "Naturally Shrub" campaign - specifically promote biodiversity and the protection of native animal species.
